What is the difference between Sports Massage and Remedial Massage?

This is a common question for clients when they are confronted with different ‘types’ of massages and are looking for the best course of action for them.

Sports Massage

Sports massage focuses on specific techniques to help your body prepare and recover at any level of sporting activity.

Pre Event

Sports massage before an event can prepare your muscles by increasing blood flow to the area and ensuring they are at their optimum before the event.

Post Event

Sports massage also aids your recovery after an event by assisting lactic acid removal and lymph drainage which can contribute to muscle soreness.

If any of the following apply to you, then a sports massage may be more beneficial:

  • You train regularly

  • You are preparing for an event

  • You have recently completed an event and want to reduce post event soreness

  • You want to avoid sports injuries

  • You need help and support with stretching

Remedial Massage

Remedial massage is slightly different, although some of the techniques can be similar to

sports massage. The word remedial indicates ‘to supply a remedy’. This type of massage is more therapeutic with a focus on relieving muscle tension and treating both acute (short term) and chronic (long term) pain.

Nowadays we are spending a lot more time at desks or in cars which are causing poor postures and ultimately increasing stress levels. The result is tight muscles, tension, aches and pains.

This is where remedial massage can help you by relieving tension, addressing your adhesions or ‘knots’ that form and improving your range of motion and more importantly, improving your mood and removing stress.

If any of the following apply to you, then a remedial massage may be more beneficial:

You have generalised aches and pains.

  • You have specific tightness in certain areas, lower back, shoulders for example

  • You sit at a desk for long periods and/or spend a lot of time driving.

  • You have chronic pain

  • You have tense muscles that cannot be relieved on your own

Ultimately, either massage type will help you be at your best, whether it be before or after a sporting activity or just to have a better quality of life.
